Join This Gang - Design Indaba 2020
While it’s still so fresh in my mind, I can’t stop thinking about it, I wanted to tell you about The Bird Architect from Design Indaba 2020. She made me pull all the happy, wide eyed, and beard-scratchy-thinking emoji faces.
The Bird Architect, Jeanne Gang to her friends, is an accomplished architect from USA. The stuff she’s built will make you oooh and aaah and ohhhh (which is different to oooh, in all the right places).
She also happens to be an avid birdwatcher. So this is what happens when architects and birds collaborate
“Who wants to build buildings that kill birds ?”
Apparently a billion birds a year get killed in North America alone, flying into building windows.
So first they designed a rooftop on their studio building that gives back to habitat in a big way, with a bajillion bees, and gorgeous hives (“And yummy hunny” – Winnie The Pooh) making it a haven for birds.
Then they designed this building, with interesting windows. They’re tinted in a certain way, and differently shaped, which, you guessed it, mitigates the whole bird-smashing thing. Plus, who wouldn’t want to live here?
