Improving Content Shareability
During the 2013 Super Bowl, Oreo was the talk of the town.
Unexpectedly there was a massive power outage inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
At 8:48 p.m. Oreo tweeted this ad with the caption: “Power Out? No Problem”.
Since then it has been retweeted over 14,000 times and went viral on other social media channels.
On one of the biggest days for the advertising industry and where brands spend a fortune, Oreo took advantage and ended up having one of the most powerful ads of the year - and it was free.
Being timely and relevant on social media is one of the biggest game changers for brands. By being on the lookout at all times for trending topics or unexpected events, you’ll be more ready to jump at opportunities to make your brand stand out from the crowd.
There are no silver bullets to make your content spread like wildfire, however trying the tip above and these three steps below is sure to help.
Make your content easy to share, or better - make it fun to share. Including a feedback loop means that as your content is shared, it encourages more sharing, the way Hotmail did by attaching the message “Get your private, free email at www.hotmail.com” to every email sent.
Push your content. Be prepared to send your work out to many, many people and follow up with inexhaustible enthusiasm. Where possible take the time to personalise the message, it will be worth it, promise. (Tip: Never underestimate the power of a handwritten letter!)
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Keep making content - that way you’ll learn that what worked last week isn’t necessarily working this week. The right post at the wrong time will create nothing but crickets.
