The term ‘Black Friday’ was initially coined on the 24 September, 1869, when the US gold market crashed.

A little different to what it means today!

The meaning changed to reflect the status of ‘being in the black’ for US business - when accounting by hand, black is used for profit and red for losses.

Because the day after Thanksgiving signified the start of a lucrative period for retail, it became known as Black Friday!

To celebrate it, here’s some fun facts!

  • Black Friday wasn’t officially claimed to be the busiest shopping day of the year, until 2001. 🛍

  • 12% of Black Friday shoppers are drunk. 🍻

  • It’s actually not the busiest shopping day of the year. The Saturday before Christmas is! 🎄

  • The days from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday capture 20% of all holiday online shopping! 🦃
