How much sex are we ACTUALLY having?
I’m not really one who falls in love with things like ‘search data’, or really any kind of data, even though it’s all around us and becoming more valuable by the nano-second (according to data).
I’ve never been particularly good at maths, and data often feels like it falls in the less developed left-hand side of my brain.
But what does float my boat is those strange, bizarre, utterly odd snippets (often about sex) that remind us just how marvellously unique the world and the people who in inhabit it are.
Speaking of unique people, meet Stephen Davidowitz, he’s where the worlds of data and strange collide. I came across him while whipping through the new 42 Courses Digital Marketing Course.
He’s this brilliant information geek, who uses Google search data to uncover some really interesting stories. ‘Google search data’, may not sound so sexy at first glance, but check this out:
One of his surveys looked at the data on condom use and found that American males reported that they used condoms a total of 1.6 billion times a year. That’s a lot of sex!
But when the female population was asked the same question, they reported only using 1.1 billion condoms.
500 million! That’s a bit of a shortfall, even accounting for the LGBT audience.
Surely the totals should be closer?
But, here’s the really interesting bit, when Davidowitz looked at the total annual sales of condoms in the USA, he discovered it was only really 600 million.
So, bottom line, just because you can see data doesn’t mean it’s true.
And, never believe someone when they tell you how often they have sex. 😂🤣
Data, it’s all around us and how we use it is key. It’s a big part of digital marketing, which we just so happen to have a brand spanking new course on. If you’re keen to understand more about this topic, then check out our Digital Marketing course.
